    Other Hong Kong Charities With Which We Have Been Involved

    Village People Project Limited

    With our assistance, Village People Project Limited (VPP) was founded in March 2009 and we assisted VPP to obtain Hong Kong charitable status under section 88 of Hong Kong Inland Revenue Ordinance from the Inland Revenue Department (IRD Hong Kong) in the same year, as we have for other Hong Kong charities. As of today, we have been providing ongoing Hong Kong company secretarial services on a pro-bono basis.

    The aim of VPP, one of many hardworking Hong Kong charities, is to improve the personal and community well-being of women and children in rural China by constructing well-designed, functional, and sustainable social and sanitary facilities, namely, bathhouses, that serve the needs of the community and have defined and measurable benefits. After many conversations with village people, local doctors, community officials, and potential village partners, as well as many visits to Maojiazhuang to get a thorough understanding of all the factors and conditions, the idea of a bathhouse was developed.

    Initially, VPP was the primary sponsor, owner and developer. Later on, in partnership with local social entrepreneurs, VPP acted as a facilitator and a resource platform. It began with the idea of creating sustainable organisations to deliver social benefits to women in rural China. These organisations will be sustainable with their own resources and are not intended to be charities requiring constant funding by donations. Each project undertaken by VPP would be nurtured and developed with a modern approach to venture philanthropy that leads to sustainable performance and tangible results.

    Between October and December 2007 the first bathhouse was constructed, with the official opening celebration was in February 2008. The first bathhouse was funded through donations from the M Restaurant Group and associated individuals. The Maojiazhuang Malidoulaixi Bathhouse was an immediate success. Assorted technical problems were addressed and resolved with an upgrade.

    VPP then initiated a search for a second village in late 2008 and by February 2009 had settled on Xifeng. Construction, funded by the Dutch government and private donations, started in September 2009 and was completed by January 2010, with the official opening of the Xifeng Malidoulaixi Bathhouse in May 2010.

    A third village, Sanquan, was identified and selected in May 2010, and funding was provided by CIEE and private donors. The Sanquan Malidoulaixi Bathhouse officially opened in March 2011.

    A fourth village, Sunjiacun, was agreed on in May 2010, and funding was obtained from the Dutch government and the Anber Foundation. Construction began in August 2011. The Sunjiacun Malidoulaixi Bathhouse officially opened in May 2012.

    As of May 2012, VPP has successfully established four social enterprises. The four bathhouses, serving a population of 15,000, are operating profitably and have delivered 30,000+ showers (20% of these are free or sub-vented).

    Charltons has worked with a number of Hong Kong charities, assisting them to gain Hong Kong charitable status under section 88 of Hong Kong Inland Revenue Ordinance.

    Barnard Club of HONGKONG Limited

    With our assistance, Barnard Club of HONGKONG Limited (formerly known as Society for Children’s Welfare Limited and The Children’s Foundation Limited) (BCHK) was founded in May 2010. Upon its incorporation, we assisted BCHK with its application for charitable status under section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance and subsequently, charitable status was granted to BCHK by the IRD in November 2010. As of today, we have been providing ongoing company secretarial services on a pro-bono basis.

    BCHK aims to provide financial assistance to sick and needy children primarily in Hong Kong, and/or other places in Asia. Specifically, BCHK aims at working with orphanages and hospitals in Hong Kong and China to identify sick and needy children (with a focus on orphans) and to support them financially.

    The Incorporated Trustees of the Wah Kiu Yat Po Fund for Relief of Underprivileged Children

    Another of the many worthy Hong Kong charities, The Incorporated Trustees of the Wah Kiu Yat Po Fund for Relief of Underprivileged Children (Wah Kiu Yat Po Fund) was established in January 1972 and granted Hong Kong charitable status by the IRD Hong Kong under the Hong Kong Inland Revenue Ordinance on the same date. It has three subsidiaries, which includes: Wah Kiu Yat Po Fund for Relief of Underprivileged Children, Wah Kiu Yat Po Reader’s Scholarship Fund and Wah Kiu Yat Po Readers Loan Fund for Post-secondary Students. Like other Hong Kong charities, we have been providing ongoing Hong Kong company secretarial services on a pro-bono basis.

    The objectives for which the Wah Kiu Yat Po Fund is established include :

    • to give relief to underprivileged children;
    • to grant scholarships to students in financial difficulties; and
    • to provide interest free loans to post-secondary students.
